Abstract: 

The human brain remains one of the most remarkable computing systems ever discovered—capable of extraordinary efficiency, adaptability, and intelligence while consuming only a fraction of the energy required by today’s AI systems.
What principles enable such performance, and how can they inspire the next generation of computing architectures?
This one-day workshop, “Spiking in Brains and Machines,” will explore these questions by connecting insights from computational neuroscience, dynamical systems, artificial intelligence, and computer architecture.
Participants will gain an integrated understanding of the principles underlying spiking neural activity and how these biological mechanisms can inspire fundamentally new approaches to computation and AI.
Throughout the day, Dr. Eugene Izhikevich will present the scientific foundations of spiking neurons and neural computation, based on his landmark book, Dynamical Systems in Neuroscience: The Geometry of Excitability and Bursting, before presenting his latest vision for translating these concepts into future computing architectures, as described in his Spiking Manifesto.
Together, these complementary perspectives demonstrate how ideas originating in neuroscience may shape the future of machine intelligence, creating new opportunities for interdisciplinary research and technological innovation.
The workshop will conclude with an interactive panel discussion featuring leading researchers from both academia and industry, focusing on emerging research directions, open scientific challenges, and opportunities for future collaboration in neuromorphic computing, AI hardware, and brain-inspired architectures.
